All of Minnesota’s Civil War soldiers spent time at Fort Snelling, as did former Confederate prisoners and Dakota Indian families.  Learn their stories from 1860s letters, diaries and newspaper accounts.
Stephen Osman is a graduate of St. Olaf College who retired as senior historian with the Minnesota Historical Society.  He managed Historic Fort Snelling for over three decades, and actively researches, speaks and writes about Minnesota’s role in the Civil War and the Dakota War.  Osman served with the US Army Reserve in Psychological Operations at Fort Snelling and is a board member of several Minnesota historical organizations.  He is the author of numerous articles in history journals and the book Fort Snelling and the Civil War just published by the Ramsey County Historical Society.
