Rotary International

The world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA, was formed on 23 February 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The name "Rotary" derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices.

Rotary's popularity spread throughout the United States in the decade that followed; clubs were chartered from San Francisco to New York. By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed on six continents, and the organization adopted the name Rotary International a year later.

The Rotary Club of Saint Paul

Mission

Saint Paul Rotary strengthens our entire community and connects with the world through service, friendship and fun.

Vision

We see a world where people unite to take action to create lasting change in St Paul, across the globe and in ourselves.

History

The Rotary Year 2009-2010 marked the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Saint Paul. Founded on February 19, 1910, it became the 10th club of what is known today as Rotary International.  In over a century of service, its efforts have ranged from the drive to build St. Paul's Union Station to the improvement of drinking water, health and schools in a remote village in Guyana. What started as a gathering of 17 business leaders in 1910, has grown into a club of about 200 members in 2010.  The club belongs to Rotary District 5960 which covers parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Projects

Each year, the Rotary Club of Saint Paul sponsors and participates in service projects on a local, national and international level. Some are ongoing programs and some fill a specific need for a short time period.

Not every Rotarian participates in every project, but every Rotarian has the opportunity to contribute time and talents to worthwhile efforts on several levels.

Perhaps Rotary's best-known international program is PolioPlus, a worldwide effort to completely eradicate polio from the earth. A cooperative effort with several other organizations, it appears this program will be 100% successful in this decade.

Saint Paul Rotary Foundation

While the club operations are funded through membership fees, all our service projects are funded by the Saint Paul Rotary Foundation (SPRF). Club members and non-members donate to the SPRF which is a US-registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. In many cases, our own funding is matched by generous grants from Rotary International and Rotary District 5960.

We recognize individuals who contribute - or in whose name is contributed - a gift of $1,000 or more to the SPRF by awarding the Elmer L. Andersen Fellowship. Both one-time or cumulative donations are eligible, and multiple Elmer L. Andersen Fellowships will be awarded for each additional $1,000 contribution.

If you like what we do, you can donate online or contact us for more information.
