MARCH 8, 2016 PROGRAM:
A New Fitzgerald Era for Saint Paul?

Saint Paul native son, F. Scott Fitzgerald, is widely regarded as one of America’s greatest writers.  Each year, hundreds of thousands of his books are sold worldwide, and his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, makes virtually every list of the best American novels of all time.  In his birthplace, we honor him with a statue and have named a theater after him, yet the visitor has difficulty discovering more about his Saint Paul roots.

Stu Wilson will highlight the work of a new nonprofit, Fitzgerald in Saint Paul, which is forging a new era for Fitzgerald celebrations in Minnesota.  The organization has launched successful programs, is beginning educational outreach activities, and will host the 14th international Fitzgerald Conference in 2017.  The organization ultimately hopes to create a visitor or interpretative center for the return of the “Roaring 20s” and the centennial of Gatsby in 2025.

Jay Fender, Drake Bank, highlighted the March 8 program - Stu Wilson will speak on F. Scott Fitzgerald. Kathleen Riley, United Way, retired invited happy dollars which included Awards, Birthdays, Special occasions, Family outings, St. Paul Crashed Ice., the Wild and high school tourney time!

Mindee Kastelic, SPACC, introduced the speakers, Trenton Henspeter, Right Track, Youth Employment Matters, Elisa Rasmussen, SPACC Foundation Director and Khalique Rogers, Right Track intern. Right Track is a unique City of St. Paul career development initiative for youth, offering jobs and internships to build a diverse workforce for the future.  Youth of color are likely to have less exposure to early job opportunities and experiences with smaller community or professional networks to support their job and career interests.

Right Track invites St. Paul employers of all sizes and industries to sponsor a high school intern this summer.  Employers can indicate their interest to be matched with an intern by visiting righttrack.stpaul.gov.  Employers can sponsor 1 or more intern for a 6-9 week summer experience ranging from 15 to 40 hours per week.  Employers are asked to pay a minimum of $9.00 per hour.  There may also be scholarship funds available to assist employers in covering costs. Last summer the program placed 108 youth and 95% of supervisors reported they would recommend their intern.  94% of youth completed the internship and accompanying training provided by Right Track staff.  Other opportunities to support Right Track and St. Paul youth is through sponsoring scholarships, volunteering as interviewers or speakers and recommending the program to other employers. Students who have participated in the program are highly committed to their success and to the community with many going on for post-secondary education after completing high school or being offered opportunities through their work sites.  Members noted that the trades were a particular important industry for the program to connect with.

President Carla thanks the Right Track presenters and lead members through the Four Way Test and the meeting was adjourned about 1:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Trixie Golberg

Volunteer for Rotary Meeting Teams!

Thanks to a recommendation from Jodi, I have used Volunteer Spot to set up all of the volunteer opportunities for our upcoming meetings. So the answer to "how do I get to help out at the meeting?" is "follow this link and sign up."

http://vols.pt/hd7EGu

Or call me at 651.767.8497 (for those of you who prefer the phone).

You do not need to create yet another login and there are no passwords to remember! Just follow the link, confirm your email and start signing up for meeting teams. Volunteer Spot will send you reminders, and will let me know where the needs are for upcoming meetings. Attention new members: serving as a greeter and taking the microphone, either to offer the inspirational moment or to introduce guests and visiting Rotarians, is an excellent way to network and get your face in front of the club!

We are in particular need of scribes (note takers). There are three simple steps to taking the notes:
1) use the word document agenda you'll receive as your template - half of the information is already there!
2) Fill in a paragraph or two on the speaker and
3) email your notes to Jodi by end of day Wednesday.

(And you thought I was making it look like hard work!)

Thank you for whatever you can do to to make our weekly meetings a great experience!
