SEPTEMBER 6, 2016 MEETING:
No Meeting - Holiday
There will be no Club meeting on September 6th.  See you all on September 13th offsite on the Padelford!
AUGUST 30, 2016 ROTARY IN REVIEW:
Will Schroeer

East Metro Strong is a public-private partnership of businesses, cities and counties working together to bring more and better transit investment to the east Metro and catalyze job growth and economic development opportunities. Will Schroeer of East Metro Strong presented Club 10 with the options for expansion of the economy in the east Metro along envisioned transit corridors that cannot occur without a foundation of transit investments.

Vice President Jerry Faletti brought the meeting to order (even with a cash bar!) at 12:15 p.m. on a late summer day in downtown Saint Paul. Jerry led the assembled Rotarians in singing accompanied by Bob Jones on the piano. Michael-jon Pease provided today's Inspirational Minute. Kristin Montpetit facilitated the introduction of visiting Rotarians and guests. Today's Greeters were Carla Hauge, John Chandler and Ririko Nagaishi (inbound Youth Exchange student).

Vice President Jerry reminded Club 10 members that there is no meeting next Tuesday due to Labor Day week. The next weekly luncheon will be Tuesday, September 13th. Past President Jim Kosmo promoted the meeting on the 13th which will NOT be at the hotel but will be "on the River" so please sign up on the website so Jodi has an accurate lunch count (remember, the boat leaves the dock at 12:30).

Rotary Birthdays were recognized for the month of August with the traditional cupcakes. Jerry then asked Kristin to preview the Holiday Party on Thursday, December 8th at the University Club. Start thinking of those Silent Auction items! New Saint Paul Rotary Foundation Board President Dan McKeown took the microphone to present an Elmer L. Andersen Award to Heidi Fisher. The Award is presented to those who contribute up to $1,000 to the Saint Paul Rotary Foundation. Scott Van, Club 10 Board of Directors member, provided information on the upcoming Rose Sale that will take place on Thursday, October 6th. Kristin collected Happy Dollars.

Immediate Past President Carla Hauge introduced today's speaker, Will Schroeer of East Metro Strong, a public-private partnership (business-cities-counties-philanthropy) for transit investment in the east Metro region. The mission of the partnership is to bring more and better transit investment to the east Metro and catalyze job growth and economic development opportunities.  The Twin Cities, and the east Metro specifically, need better transit as part of their "recruitment toolbox" for new workers to relocate to the area. Mr. Schroeer displayed various graphics showing relative sizes of transit systems. The Twin Cities is now ranked thirty-ninth (39th) in terms of attractiveness for the millennial generation. A thriving region is a product we are making. Transit is a necessary component. If we put in too little transit investment, in the view of the partnership, this area will have a less competitive product. East Metro Strong endeavors to create a vision, support others in implementing that vision and educating others about the vision. Much  more complete information is available at the partnership's website: Eastmetrostrong.com

Vice President Jerry thanked Mr. Schroeer for his presentation, presented him with a Club 10 recognition certificate and noted that a donation would be made in his name to the Saint Paul Public Library's "Reading Together" program. Also, Jerry presented Mr. Schroeer with a Rotary coin inscribed with the Rotary "Four-Way Test." Jerry then led those assembled in a recitation of the Four-Way Test ("Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?") and rang the bell to close the meeting at 1:14 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,

Chuck Standfuss, Scribe

ROTARY AFTER HOURS:
Landmark Jewelers
Sarah Kolar was the ever-elegant hostess for a Rotary After Hours gathering at Landmark Jewelers on August 25. About 30 club members, spouses and friends ogled the beautiful inventory, enjoyed hors d'oeuvres from Great Waters, summer libations and great company.

Doug Bruce and his smokin' hot wife Dana were back from a surprising win at the Del Mar horse track in La Jolla (30 to 1 odds!). Doug and Pat Hartford saw bears, presidents and lots of Harleys during their great American road trip.

Lynne Beck added a beautiful Italian necklace to her huge collection of artisan jewelry, and Dick Nicholson sported one of the biggest bolo ties this writer has ever seen. He and Eric Jolly are looking for more members for their bolo club...Sarah, do you have any bolos in your back inventory?

Thanks for a great summer gathering! Kudos to Doug Bruce for being the only one to register, and to the many Rotarians who did the Saints game, Thursday Fellowship Breakfast with Scott Van and happy hour all in 24 hours of Rotary fun!!

Save the Date!
Holiday Gala & Silent Auction Dec. 8th
Mark your calendars for Thursday, December 8th for the Club 10 Holiday Gala & Silent Auction. This year's event will be held at the University Club of Saint Paul. Stay tuned for registration information.

Volunteer for Rotary Meeting Teams!
Calling all Rotarians!

Based on the great set up done by Michael-Jon Pease, we are continuing the use of SignUp.com (previously known as VolunteerSpot.com) to help in managing the volunteer positions we need to fill for each of our upcoming Rotary meetings.

So the answer to "how do I get to help out at the meeting?" is "follow this link and sign up."

Or call me at 612.414.6093 (for those of you who prefer the phone).

You do not need to create yet another login and there are no passwords to remember! Just follow the link, confirm your email and start signing up for meeting teams. SignUp.com will send you reminders, and will let me know where the needs are for upcoming meetings. Attention new members: serving as a greeter and taking the microphone, either to offer the inspirational moment or to introduce guests and visiting Rotarians, is an excellent way to network and get your face in front of the club!

We are urging every member to sign up for a few spots in any of the roles available. Through SignUp.com you can view the open spots for all upcoming meetings in any of the 6 roles and sign-up for what best foryour schedule and what you would enjoy. It’s easy to sign-up and everyone's help makes us a stronger club.

Thank you for whatever you can do to make our weekly meetings a great experience!
